NGN Daily: Beef is Back in the Green

Beef is Back

According to some experts grass fed beef could actually help stop global warming.
Beef got a bad rap in 2006 when a report claimed that 18 percent of man made greenhouse gas emissions came from livestock.

Farmers say the key is to give cattle plenty of room and rotate them. They say allowing the animals to graze this way will actually spur new grass growth and make soil richer.

99% of U.S. beef cattle live out their last months on feedlots. Much of the carbon footprint from beef comes from growing grain to feed the animals.

Grass fed beef does produce more methane than conventional ones because high fiber plants are harder to digest; however, experts say that net emissions are lower because they help trap carbon in the soil.

Golden State Warriors Have Solar

The Golden State Warriors are joining the Phoenix Suns in investing in solar technology. The NBA team will use 537 solar panels to power a practice facility.

The 143-kilowatt array is expected to provide 26 percent of the Oakland facility’s energy needs. It should save the team about $36,000 a year in electricity costs.

The Phoenix Suns home arena, US Airways Center, is powered by a 194-kilowatt solar system.
