NGN Daily: Ozone in the Spring

Higher levels of Springtime Ozone in U.S. Attributed to Asia

Springtime ozone levels in western North America are on the rise. Pollutants from Asia are being blown east with the wind, across the Pacific Ocean, and into the west coast. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) used high tech equipment to track airflows and match it to ozone movements. The excess pollutants could make meeting the Clean Air Act standards difficult.

What is ozone?

Ozone is a gas that can potentially harm the respiratory system at the ground level. However, in the stratosphere (30 miles above the surface) it provides a protective layer that blocks the sun’s damaging rays.

What can you do to stay healthy with high ground level ozone?

Limit your time outdoors when you are doing strenuous activities such as, jogging, biking, soccer, and heavy manual labor. Also, schedule strenuous sports in the mornings or evenings when ozone levels are lower.
