NGN Daily: Pesticide Turns Male Frogs Female

Pesticides Turn Male Frogs Female

Another not so healthy side effect has been linked to the widely used pesticide, Atrazine. It apparently is turning one in ten male frogs into females. The newly female frogs can reproduce with male frogs but all of the offspring will be male. This can lead to entire populations being wiped out because the female to male ratios are so disproportionate. Scientists think this may be a possible reason as to why amphibian populations have decreased globally.

Prefab Homes for Haiti

InnoVida Holdings, LLC, a manufacturer of lightweight composite panels, has announced plans to donate 1,000 prefab homes to Haiti. The “flat pack” structures, designed by Andres Duany, are energy efficient and easy and affordable to build at roughly $3,000-$4,000 per home. The company also announced plans to build a factory near Port-au-Prince to manufacture the homes. The initiative could lead to the production of 10,000 homes per year and approximately 250 new direct jobs in Haiti.
