Deforestation and Nasca Demise
Cambridge University released a study suggesting that the Nasca people of South America faded from existence because of a tree. The huarango tree is vital to a desert ecosystem because it improves soil quality, moisture, and has deep roots. Using plant remains, researchers found that the area was deforested in favor of crops. The fragile ecosystem was destroyed as a consequence.
The Nasca are most well known for the giant lines etched into the desert from Nazca to Palpa in Peru called the “Nazca Lines.” The lines are large-scale representations of geometric shapes and animals that are only discernable from the air.
Sustainable Kraft
Kraft Foods is incorporating Rainforest Alliance Certified sustainable cocoa beans in the Cote d’Or dark chocolate products. Rainforest Alliance certifies farms that reduce water pollution, soil erosion, environmental and human health issues, waste, and water use. They also improve conditions for workers and the farm. By as early as 2012, Kraft Foods plans to purchase 30,000 tons of cocoa beans from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms.
