A Partnership to Save Coral Reefs
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Nature Conservancy have partnered to save the coral reefs in the Caribbean, Florida, the Pacific Islands, and Hawaii. Coral reefs are currently suffering from the effects of climate change, pollution, and overfishing. As the ocean water temperature rises, the organisms that live in the coral die and turn white, a process known as coral bleaching. Once the coral dies, the entire reef is vulnerable as well because the coral is vital to the food chain. NOAA and the Nature Conservancy will dedicate over 7 million dollars to preserve coral reefs for the future.
